Walker, George H.

George H. Walker (1852–1927) was a Boston-based cartographer, publisher, and lithographer whose firm, George H. Walker & Co., operated from about 1879 until his death in 1927. Established as the last major lithographic firm founded in nineteenth-century Boston, the company earned a reputation for producing work of consistently high quality through the employment of skilled draftsmen, including Joseph L. Jones, C. E. Jorgensen, Richard P. Mallory, F. Pond, and Albert F. Poole.

As noted by Pierce and Slautterback in Boston Lithography, the firm’s output encompassed portraits, sheet music covers, book illustrations, bird’s-eye views, maps, cemetery and residential development plans, and architectural views of homes and factories. Walker was especially prolific as a cartographic publisher, producing important atlases of Massachusetts and Essex County, detailed maps of Boston and its metropolitan area, and panoramic views of Boston and popular New England destinations including Edgartown, Bar Harbor, Provincetown, Mount Washington, and Lake Winnipesaukee.
