Dr. Samuel Abbott Green
Groton native Dr. Samuel Green (1830–1918) was a Civil War surgeon, physician, historian, and public servant who served as Boston’s City Physician and Mayor.
Born in Groton, Green graduated from Lawrence Academy in 1847 and from Harvard College in 1851 before earning his medical degree. During the Civil War he served as surgeon of the 24th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, commanded the hospital ships Recruit and Cosmopolitan, and was brevetted lieutenant colonel for distinguished service. He also established Roanoke Cemetery, one of the first permanent burial grounds for Union soldiers.
After the war, Green served as superintendent of the Boston Dispensary, City Physician of Boston, and Mayor of Boston in 1882. In retirement he devoted himself to historical research, publishing several works, including five on the history of Groton. He died in Groton in 1918 and is buried in Groton Cemetery.
