As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, it is important that we acknowledge the sacrifices, victories, and contributions of those from our very own Groton. Recognizing Groton’s Revolutionaries is the goal of “To See My Country Free…”, opening July 18th at the Boutwell House. This exhibit showcases objects from the Groton History Center’s collection that tell the story of the American Revolution, as experienced here.
Accompanying 18th century handcuffs, a sword used at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and a self-portrait by a known local counterfeiter, are a series of informational panels that engage the objects in conversations about such topics as the role of women, the role of slavery, and how patriotic celebrations have changed over time. An accompanying “SoldierWalk” in Georgie’s Garden recognizes the men and women who participated in the birth of our nation.
